1.0 Background information

The Department of General Studies is among three (3) academic department in the Institute that provides teaching services to all other academic departments. The department cut across all other departments to provide assistance in teaching, examination administration, research and consultancy carried out at diploma, bachelor degree and master degree level. The department collaborates with quality assurance unit of the Institute to ensure quality delivery of academic, research and consultancy services.

The department offers fundamental courses in areas of Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Research Methods, Communication Skills, Computer Application, ICT, Financial Management, Technical Report Writing, Gender, Business and Entrepreneurship. No elective or optional courses offered in the department.

Currently, the department have 30 teaching staff members on full time basis and one part-time instructor in the field of Communication skills, Mathematics, ICT, Physics, Chemistry, Finance and Accounts, Entrepreneurship, Social works, Gender and development and Information studies. The staff works as a team under Institute core values of professionalism, integrity, customer focused and innovation. The vision, mission and slogan of the department is under construction.

1.1 Location

The head of department office is located in the plumbing workshop opposite administration block of the Water Institute.

1.2 The departmental sections.

This department has two sections namely Science, gender and entrepreneurship (EP/MSc) and section for Information and communication technology (ICT). The department also has one coordinator of examination (EC).

1.3 The hierarchy of the department

Head of the department is assisted by two heads of sections and one examination coordinator. The head of department, heads of sections and examination coordinator shall constitute the management team of the department of general studies. The management team, with technical and professional support employees, shall establish standards, capacity  building,  coordination  of  the  department  training  programs,
